TINY SPACES DEEP CONNECTIONS is a 2-year research initiative designed to develop a more sustainable model for artist residencies. Funded by Creative Europe, with support from the City of Oulu, three organisations from across Europe are working together to design this new model. InWole (DE), Communitism (GR) and TaikaBox (FI) all offer artist residencies in tiny, recycled spaces. All travel within the project is conducted using more sustainable methods, which, essentially, take longer than air travel, so each residency begins as soon as an artist leaves their home – the train carriages and ferry cabins become workspaces and provide inspiration for the residency.

The residency programme is also an opportunity to connect with other artists, producers, galleries and venues along the journey to develop a network dedicated to sustainability within the sphere of European artist residencies.

Artists are chosen through an open call process, with some residencies happening simultaneously to enable cross-border collaboration using a range of digital tools. The project will culminate with a symposium and exhibition alongside the programme of Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture.
